Usually, it is the pre-paid telecom subscribers that get the best plans. But Jio is changing it. On Thursday the company announced a new postpaid plan named JioPostPaid that aims to disrupt the market in a fairly significant way. The plan costs Rs 199 per month and doesn’t require any security deposit, and gives users unlimited voice calls, with India-wide roaming included, along with 25GB high-speed data per month.
In addition to the voice and data benefits, the JioPostPaid also gives consumers option to make international calls at the rate of 50 paisa per minute for the US and Canada. The rates for other countries are higher, although the highest tariff — Rs 6 per minute for countries like Pakistan and Israel — is still less than what other operators charge.
Jio said that its new postpaid plans are “zero-touch” plans, although it is not clear what the company means by this. But probably it is calling the JioPostPaid “zero touch” because it doesn’t require any security deposit and comes “pre-activated”.
The idea behind the Rs 199 JioPostPaid is to target the consumers who are currently using postpaid plans from companies like Airtel and Vodafone. If you compare the cheapest post plan from Airtel and Vodafone with free unlimited voice calls costs Rs 499. Airtel calls these plans Infinity Plans while Vodafone terms them RED plans. But even with these plans, the roaming charges are extra. So in a way Jio with Rs 199 postpaid plan is not only offering services at a lower cost, it is also giving consumers more by bundling free national roaming in it.
Even for international roaming, the JioPostPaid plan offers a more seamless way, where consumer will not have to call up the customer care in advance to get the roaming activated on their phones. Even if they don’t take a separate roaming pack, consumers will be able make calls at Rs 2 per minute from outside India to most countries. Or they will be able to use data at Rs 2 per MB (quite expensive actually) even if they don’t subscribe to the separate international roaming plan.
Talking of international roaming, Jio is now offering three plans to the JioPostPaid subscribers: These are Rs 575, which will give users 250GB high-speed data per day and unlimited calls and messages for one day. Then there is the Rs 2875 plan, which will give the same benefits for seven days. And finally there is Rs 5751 plan that will give users 5GB data and unlimited calls and messages for one month. Jio also said that the same international roaming options will be available to pre-paid customers as well.
