Apple offers free battery replacement to select 13-inch MacBook Pro users

Apple on Friday announced that the company is rolling out a battery replacement program for select non-Touch Bar 13-inch MacBook Pro. The Cupertino major said that there’s some component failure in a limited number of MacBook Pros that have reportedly built-in battery to expand. Apple has announced to offer free replacement for such batteries worldwide.

However, making it clear that this is no safety issue, Apple said, “the flaw that has been reported in some 13-inch MacBook Pros without Touch Bars, is not a safety issue.” The company on its support page writes that the issue is with a small number of MacBook Pros manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017. However, Apple didn’t reveal the actual number of MacBooks that have been affected by the issue.

Apple took to Apple support page to post details about the eligibility criteria for the replacement program. The company noted, “Use the serial number checker below to see if your device qualifies for this program. If your 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) has an eligible serial number, Apple will replace the battery, free of charge.”

To check if your MacBook Pro is affected and needs to be replaced you can simply head on to this link and enter your serial number. If in case your laptop is found affected you will need to take your MacBook Pro to either to a nearby Apple Repair Centre, or Apple Retail Store, or Apple Authorised Service Provider to get the unit repaired.

Apple noted, that the “your 13-inch MacBook Pro will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program and in working order. Service may take 3-5 days.” It is worth noting that you should backup all your data before giving it for the replacement.

The customers who have already paid for the battery replacement will be eligible for a refund, Apple said. Apple further notes that the replacement program will not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro.

In addition, Apple also notes that “if your 13-inch MacBook Pro has any damage which impairs the replacement of the battery, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the battery replacement. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.”
