After Nokia 6 (2018) edition, HMD Global is now gearing up to announce two more devices in the next couple of months. One being the high-end phone, aka Nokia 9 and another one may be HMD Global’s first ever Android Go edition phone or Nokia 1. All that we know about the upcoming Nokia 1 is that the smartphone will be the cheapest device by HMD Global till date, and run on Android Go operating system. Nokia 1 has now been leaked in two live images by a Chinese micro blogging site — Baidu, which show the device from the back.
It is noteworthy that both the leaked images show noticeably different designs, however, the positioning of the camera set up and LED flash is more or less similar. This indicates two things — either HMD Global is still exploring options for Nokia 1 or one of the two images is of the Nokia 1, while the other one may be of some other smartphone that the company may be planning to announce this year. As of now, the Finland based company hasn’t confirmed the phone — however, reports suggest that we may see Nokia 1 launch sometime around March at Mobile World Congress 2018.
The images don’t reveal much about the upcoming Nokia 1. All that it shows is the single camera at the back, below which sits the LED flashlight. Right below the camera – there’s the Nokia branding logo — while one image shows the brand logo carved in white, while the second image shows the Nokia logo in black colour. Going by the design, the images more or less confirm the previous rumours that — Nokia 1 may somewhat resemble the Nokia 2, in terms of design.
The key difference between Nokia 1 and Nokia 2 will be on the software department. While Nokia 2 runs on full Android, Nokia 1 will be the first phone by HMD Global to come with Android Go. To recall, Google said that it will partner with smartphone companies to launch a lot of Android Oreo Go Edition phones in the upcoming year – and it seems Nokia 1 may be the first one. Android Go is basically an operating system for budget smartphones with 512MB to 1GB of RAM. Given that, Nokia 1 is (obviously) expected to come with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, much like what we have seen in Nokia 2 as well.
In terms of the specifications — at least all that the rumours suggest – Nokia 1 may come with a 720p IPS screen and a metal frame and polycarbonate body hark back. Since Nokia 1 is said to be a part of Android Go program, it won’t be wrong to say that the smartphone is aimed at emerging markets such as India. This means that chances are that the smartphone will be launched in India soon after the global announcement in March.
From the pricing point of view, Nokia 1 — because it will run on Android Go will be cheaper than the Nokia 2 which is priced at Rs 6,999. Meanwhile, a newly leaked report by GSM Arena suggests that the Nokia 1 may be priced around $95 — which is somewhat around Rs 6,000.
